Cantuar's sermon by contrast seemed to me to be more of a pointed jab at his fellow clerics than preaching to the public at large.

Well, naturally. If the Queen is going to avoid politics and get all theological, then wasn't the Archbishop somehow morally obligated to balance the equation by avoiding the Gospel and going all political?

My mood was undoubtely improved by avoiding Rowan's sermon altogether and reading one by George MacDonald instead. :)

The depressing thing about Cantuar's sermon isn't so much the content as it is the notion that the latter part of the sermon even needed to be said--which, unfortunately, it needed to be said, one place or another. These days in a liberal diocese it seems to be approaching even money whether the liturgy as said will be that of the BCP.
